About Capitol Cinema
On September 21, 2007, film made its official return to the Capitol Theatre, a historic 1926 movie palace, with a screening of “Into the Wild” at the inaugural South Dakota Film Festival.  That same year, Aberdeen Community Theatre (ACT) formed its film subsidiary, Capitol Cinema. Capitol Cinema’s programming initially began with a limited yearly film season, December through March, in between ACT’s live theater productions.

In 2013, a new state-of-the-art digital movie projector was installed in the main auditorium, replacing the refurbished 35mm film projector and platter system. December 2015 marked the opening of THEATRE B, a 90-seat, stadium-style auditorium.  With the opening of THEATRE B, Capitol Cinema now shows Hollywood films on weekends. Capitol Cinema also hosts film festivals throughout the year. Concessions are free-will donations.

Due to COVID-19 Capitol Cinema has implemented the following policies for not fully vaccinated people:

  1. Masks or face coverings are required, except when enjoying refreshments.

  2. Social distance, a minimum of 6 feet between persons not of the same group, is required and you maybe asked to change seats to accommodate.

This cinema is equipped with an audio description and closed captioning systems. Devices available upon request.
